How do you determine therapy goals with clients? What does that process look like?

I focus on two pieces in therapy: building a solid relationship with each client and helping that client reach their goals. Upon intake, I ask several questions to learn about the goals of the client. I believe those goals should come directly from the client because that raw motivation is a strength we can pull from! I take a strengths-based approach in which we use what the client is good at to shift their dreams to reality.

What does a first session with you look like?

I try to have intake paperwork complete before the session, so we can focus on what led the client to therapy. Each client has the choice to speak about what has brought them to therapy or answer my questions following an assessment outline. For clients who wish to speak freely, I will often ask clarifying questions. I like to give clients the power to make decisions as many people who have trauma histories once had their power taken away from them. I also invite clients to tell me if any question is too invasive as I know it is such a weird concept to tell a complete stranger your entire life story!

In what ways do your life philosophy and treatment philosophy overlap?

I firmly believe that we can grow through what we go through. The hard part is taking the brave step to go through the things we have maybe avoided for years! I work with clients to build their confidence in managing their feelings so they can do the hard work of growing through the life experiences that have been holding them hostage. It is a tough, but beautiful process with amazing rewards when done at the pace of the client.

Work History

I have worked in the mental health field since 2016 after pursuing my passion to help people with trauma histories. I worked several years developing a program for adult survivors of child abuse/domestic violence survivors and gained an interest in how trauma shapes our lives. I branched out and began working with couples and families struggling to live peacefully. I have done work for several years around addictions as well. Over a year ago, I opened a private practice in which I work with a much more broad clientele including children, teens, and adults.
