What does a first session with you look like?

The first session with me typically looks like a friendly and honest conversation where we get to know each other a bit, and you give me a background on what has been going on that has brought you in. In the first session, I may ask more general questions on your life and habits, how the problem has been affecting you, and ideas that you have for changing things. It really builds a foundation for the next sessions and work to be done, and the goals that I will help you set in therapy.

If you could pick one movie or book that influenced your approach to therapy, what would it be and why?

Definitely Good Will Hunting. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and resonating initially with Matt Damon's character, feeling like there's something always holding me back. Later, as an adult and as I was choosing my career and direction in life, I watched this movie again. This time, I resonated with Robin William's character, and knew that therapy was what I needed to do. I knew that I wanted to help people achieve great things in their lives, and bring balance to an otherwise chaotic world. I really believe that any client I work with has tremendous potential, and I seek to reveal this in my work with them, helping to overcome the problems they are dealing with, but also achieve a sense of self that is more confident and determined.

What do you think is the biggest barrier today for people seeking care?

I think pride is the biggest barrier for people seeking care today. There has been a dramatic shift in society since the age of social media came about. Before this, people had little insight into what other people's lives were like and what kind of struggles or successes they achieved. Our social circles were smaller, and mostly people were private about the information they shared with anyone but the closest of friends. Today, this has changed. People broadcast their lives to the world now, and highlight the successes and the best moments to share. It's not uncommon for people I talk with to be concerned that they are the only ones dealing with the problems they are facing. In a world where you are constantly bombarded with other people's highly curated lives, it can be really easy to feel like no one else is struggling as you are. This can drive you to be more secretive about problems you face, and hide issues from even close friends that would normally be a support. Coming to a professional for help is not something to be ashamed of. More and more people seek out therapy today, as this world is changing and the landscape of social connectedness is shifting. It's not uncommon to experience anxiety and depression in life, and it's not uncommon to struggle. At a certain level, we realize that we are all human and all struggle with something. It's those that actually get help with their struggles to overcome them that are the real winners here.

Work History

I worked in hospitals and in the community as a social worker while obtaining my degree, including leading addiction recovery groups, psychotherapy sessions, and connecting clients with resources. After obtaining my Masters degree, I worked in a residential setting providing therapy to 12-17 year olds and their families. I then worked with a national insurance company helping people with medical and financial difficulties getting in the way of work and accessing healthcare. When I obtained my license to practice on my own, I opened up Avidus Therapy, LLC where I offer therapy services today.
