I believe that the goal of therapy should be client driven and centered around the needs and experiences that each individual presents with. I take time in the initial sessions to really try to get to know my clients both from an acute perspective of what is going on in this moment that brings them to therapy, but also a holistic perspective in terms of how the concerns are impacting them on a physical, emotional, spiritual, and of course mental level. In our work together, I like to frequently check in and ask questions about how my client views their progress, what changes they have noticed, and the areas that still need attention. My role as a therapist is to provide the tools to enable you to feel more in control of your life and promote your overall wellness.
For many people that I have worked with, the journey through pregnancy and postpartum looks different from what they expected. One theme is the difficulty adjusting to this new normal (whatever this means in their unique situation). Feelings of guilt, feeling like a bad mom or dad, changing body image, difficulty staying connected with a partner, and establishing a work/life balance are some other recurring themes I see in my work. After the birth of a baby, it is common to feel anxious, sad, confused, or even lost. My role is to provide resources and referrals, empower clients to establish a community of support, and educate around the challenges faced in maternal mental health.
I have been told that my personality is warm and caring. My primary objective is to create a safe space for my clients where they can feel secure about opening up with what they are struggling with. I have always found laughter can help soothe during a difficult time and while I will not shy away from the depth of what my client is discussing, I tend to bring a lighthearted outlook when necessary.
In my career, I have helped people through all different life transitions from the journey through pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting; to adjusting to college life and planning for the future. Beyond maternal mental health, my career has been highlighted with clients who are struggling with navigating a new career, communicating effectively in relationships, learning how to manage new roles within a family, and practicing self care to strengthen their relationship with themselves. In practice, I focus on person-centered, supportive approaches that highlight personal strengths and needs. My training is in cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, solution focused, and mindfulness-based therapies with a background in trauma informed care.
