Life ebbs and flows in cycles, and through the therapy process I am committed to assisting clients in making positive shifts and gaining resiliency. For the therapeutic relationship to be effective, my expectation is that clients demonstrate the same level of commitment. One of my favorite quotes is 'You get out of it what you put into it!' I offer empathy and support during therapy sessions, but I am also directive about the working towards goals. I assign weekly homework tasks because I believe that in order to replace negative thought patterns/behaviors, it takes practice (outside of weekly sessions) to generate positive change.
Life can be challenging and I believe that people can transcend emotional wounds within a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. My style/approach to therapy is a delicate balance of offering empathy and understanding, along with providing directive and goal-oriented strategies to bring about positive change. I work collaboratively with clients, first in exploring problematic issues and negative patterns (of thought or behavior), and then in formulating the most appropriate treatment plan. I draw from a variety of therapy modalities that include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.
I'm inherently a positive person, who believes in the resiliency and ability of people to overcome barriers and negative experiences. My personality is both lighthearted and pragmatic, meaning that as a therapist I work in a goal-oriented manner with clients, but balance that with a realistic vision of the end result. Therapy is a rewarding process for clients who stay the course!
I have worked in a variety of settings, including hospitals, community based clinics, and at a group private practice (for the past four years). I have extensive experience providing individual and/or family therapy to adults of all ages.
