I trained as a counselor in the heart of San Francisco – land of inclusiveness, sexual exploration and no judgments! I am comfortable with and competent in working with LGBTQIA clients and addressing alternative relationship styles, including BDSM and consensual non-monogamy. If you are searching for a forum to improve your relationships and to become your best self, without shame, secrecy or having to fit into anyone else’s concept of “normal”, then you’ve come to the right place.
Sex Therapy is a growing area of specialization addressing complex issues around libido, sexual dysfunction, shame, pleasure and identity. Traditional counseling programs and licensure requirements provide very little training in the area of sexuality. Certified sex therapists recognized by the American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) receive between 18 months and 2 years of additional post-graduate education specifically addressing sexual issues. While certified sex therapists are still relatively rare, we are in high demand. There is a growing recognition of the need for sex positive, thoroughly trained sex therapy professionals in our field.
To be effective, therapy must occur with someone whom you feel safe with, listened to and whose pace matches yours. Therapeutic change comes from within. Wisdom is not in what the therapist says, but in what she doesn’t say, and in the questions asked at just the right moment so that you can uncover the truth inside yourself. As Terry Tempest Williams writes, “the unexpected action of deep listening can create a space of transformation capable of shattering complacency and despair.” When a therapist listens, she sets aside her own agenda and creates a sacred space where time and intention slow down. A well matched therapist will be fully present in your pain and joy and possibility, without any attachment to your choices, because outside the therapy room you remain untethered to one another. Your therapist helps you remove the detritus of who you think you ought to be and curates the vibrancy of who you truly are.
I started as a clinician working with couples and individuals at a somatic psychotherapy clinic in San Francisco, where I utilized a body-integrated lens for addressing relationship issues, trauma and anxiety. My body-integrated therapeutic approach is rooted in having been a yoga teacher for 17 years and a massage therapist for 12 years in addition to my degree in somatic therapy. I address mental health and relational dynamics from the perspective of our embodied selves, utilizing applied neuroscience and mindfulness practices to soften protective defenses and re-inhabit physicality. My post-graduate certifications took me in the direction of marriage and family therapy and sex therapy. I have had over 10 years of professional training, including as one of the few AASECT certified sex therapists in Colorado. I have had a private practice since 2011 focusing on non-normative relationship styles, particularly kink and consensual non-monogamy. I offer a pleasure-centric, sex positive approach to reducing shame and sexual dysfunction in both individuals and relationships. I am an instructor in the field of Alternative Relationship Styles, as heard on the Family Affairs podcast and presenting through the University of Denver, the Denver Family Institute and Exaholics. I currently review independently published books on the topics of sexuality, somatics and psychotherapy for BlueInk Review. I am a staff writer for ChoosingTherapy.com, contributing comprehensive articles on subjects like sex therapy and desire disorders. I am frequently consulted as a sexuality and open relationship expert in both local and national publications.
